About Gamer Kids: Not Safe For Work

Posted by Kenkaku Jul. 29, 2007 @ 12:25 AM EDT

First off, did this look like a rush job? If you think so, you're right. I made this in about three days... total time took about eight hours.

It took about the same amount of time for Modern War, but the cartoon was half as long, so that point is moot.

You see, I'm going on vacation really soon, and decided that Saturday would be my deadline.

Now with that out of the way, let's move onto the cartoon!

Man, first it was the necks, and now it's the pronunciation! I can't excuse 'content,' because I almost never say this out loud; I only type it, especially when talking about 'PS2 Resi Evil 4 content.'

I completely forgot about the pronunciation difference between 'conTENT,' such as being happy, and 'CONtent,' which refers to items and features, but now it's clear and obvious to me.

But I do have an excuse for 'reticule!' You see, I use Microsoft Word to type up my scripts before doing each episode, and whenever I typed the word 'reticle,' it got marked for a misspelling and said that the correct spelling was 'reticule,' and it was pronounced exactly the way it's spelled, with a long 'u.' This is certainly the last time I trust a computer program for logic (I'm not a very smart person to begin with).

Anyway, yeah, after hearing about the supposed 'Resident Evil 4: Wii Edition,' I had a similar reaction to Kandi's: fist in the face.

I told myself that I would not buy it unless it had a good enough reason to, as well as a budget price tag since it was a three year old game.

After learning that it would retail for $30, come with Gamecube's graphics and PS2 CON-tent, as well as a control setup that kept getting positive previews, I got the game upon launch without a second guess. It's definitely worth it.

Now, there had better be more Resident Evil 4-esque games for the Wii... Honestly, Capcom just proved that the Wii can be for hardcore gamers as much as it can be for casuals; it's all up to creativity.

Not only that, but this game expands on the past versions; I have a friend who said that he loved the title itself, even though he had trouble playing it. He would average about a 40% hit rate on the Gamecube version, but after playing the Wii version, he rounded off at 80%, and says the setup is much better.

I even brought RE4: Wii to my friend's house, who just bought a Wii, and picked up on the game for the first time very well. He says that he'll definitely buy it in the future.

It disappoints me that Umbrella Chronicles will not be a Resident Evil 4-esque title, but hey, hopefully Capcom will squeeze something out of the on-rails setup. It looks pretty good so far, and I may definitely pick it up.

You only spent 8 hours on that? Over the course of 3 days?
Look... I've spent 9 hours daily for up to 2 weeks workin' on flash before. Their have been other poeple who've worked longer and harder then me.
I'm not trying to be offensive but do you at least realize that you overratted? Your flashes deserve good scores yes. But not awards. You flashes show you have both skill in flash and voice acting but your not using them to the fullest.
When you get some freetime try working on something long. Spend a few hours a day or a few hours a week over a long period of time. Make a Gamer Kids that's close to the 10 MB limit or one that's at least 10 minutes long.
I'm not trying to be an asshole or anything. But pretty soon you could turn into the next Alvin-Earthworm. You don't wanted to be loved by a bunch of dumb 14 year olds that know jack about flash and the time it takes to make it and hated by most of the NG Community.
I don't want to see you turn into a hated author. I want to see a flash you've spent more then 8 hours on. All your awards have been empty those far. You've also pissed of alot of hard working poeple. I admit I might submit something I work maybe 6 hours on. But it's usually just for fun and not ment to be good. I don't expect stuff like it to make it past a 3.00. Sure I get surprised and it may be somethin' lile 3.30. But in your case it's goin' as high as 4.00+ and your winning awards for it.
Sorry for the long message and somewhat nagging. But it's best somebody does it before the problem gets out of control.

I understand completely what you're trying to say, and I agree with you 100%. Really, I did not expect any of my series to hit above 4.0 as an average.

The thing is, I'm completely inspired by websites such as Ctrl+Alt+Del, VGCats, Fanboys-Online, Penny Arcade... people that make comics almost every week. I decided that I should create a series of shorts so that I can have something to hand out to viewers very frequently. I never expected to get scores as high as I am right now.

Not only that, but I'm a very busy person in the real world: I have a job, a group of friends I hang out with, college that's about to commence... I have tried on numerous occasions to make large scale projects, but only ended in incompletion as other events came up that got in the way. That's really the ultimate reason why I make shorts, just for timing's sake. Maybe I'll have a better opportunity in the future, but right now, I don't.

And it's not a matter of timing, it's a matter of my own personal ability; nothing about Flash is second nature with me right now, although I'm getting really close in a few areas.

I'll at least give you this guarantee: as time goes on, and my ability gets more perfected and leans towards second nature, I'll continue my large-scale projects as they'll be much easier on my timing and position.

But, I mean, let's be honest... Newgrounds isn't exactly perfect. You've got people that work hard on first projects that might wind up getting blammed because they're new while crap entries make it through because they have clans and friends that mass vote fives and wind up getting it through.

And fanboyism, just like you said: I've seen the creators of Tomorrow's Nobodies take advantage of their fans and give them several Daily Awards just for flooding the portal with 'answer the fanmail cartoons' that have almost no variety in them at all... same characters, same backgrounds... no animation whatsoever. I'll never turn out like this. There will always be something different.

Really, I just wanted to start a series of shorts just to get familiar with the site, but now I know I have to keep the hype train going... I'll definitely expand on my Flash ability.

Thank you for your honest post!
