Breaking in the blog! About Gamer Kids

Posted by Kenkaku Jul. 17, 2007 @ 7:16 PM EDT

Man, I'll tell all of you, if the website update did not feature a blog system, I wouldn't be kissing Tom's butt right now. This certainly beats having to update the commentary of each submission for the sake of responses.

Anyway, Gamer Kids... yeah, not exactly the most stellar name for a series, but it works.

Originally, I wanted to turn this into an online webcomic. However, I didn't have Adobe Illustrator or Photoshop on hand, and certainly couldn't be arsed to pay $1000 for them, or even take the time to manage my own website. So these animated series of shorts are a definite win.

The only problem is how many submissions I can do; all the voice actors I have are in different states, or transcontinental, so getting the lines by a particular time is not exactly easy. But once I do get them, I guarantee that I can finish a short in a matter of days.

I'm not exactly the most committed of animators... I'll only work for a few hours and then get so bored that I won't touch the Flash program for a day.

Actually, I was supposed to submit a Resident Evil 4 parody that I wanted to contend with Metal Gear Awesome... but the problem was that the overall cartoon was over ten minutes long, and got so bored by the time I finished the first scene that I couldn't continue. It's still saved on my computer, but who knows when it'll be done.

Anyway, moving on to Gamer Kids Episode 1: Modern War:

As I've said numerous times, this all stemmed from the time when I got an issue of GameInformer that talked about Call of Duty's turn towards the modern era. At first, I was thinking, "Are you joking?" But after reading the article, it made perfect sense that the story would be entirely fictional.

So why did I make the cartoon anyway, do you ask? Well, I had already started making the cartoon, and I thought that it would be a fine excuse to just say that it's a tribute to my initial reaction towards the game. Got it? NO MORE REVIEWS SAYING I DON'T KNOW ABOUT THE GAME! BLARGH!

Now for the minor notes... The last thing I expected was criticism about the characters' necks.

But it makes sense, at least to me, now that I think about it. When I first learned how to draw Manga, I learned how to draw serious characters, with the anatomy as realistic as it can possibly be.

And that is where I think the 'neck problem' comes into play. To draw necks on realistic faces, the 'back' of the neck reaches the ear while the 'front' passes the chin, at least for men.

When I began to work on Gamer Kids, I decided that a more child-like art style would work better, and hence widened the faces. However, as I widened the faces, I forgot to change the neck rule and then widened the necks, as well.

Well, now that I know what the problem is, I'll be able to fix it in the next episode.

Thank you all for your support, reviews, and criticism (at least the mature ones).
