Kenkaku

Well overdue for an update

Posted by Kenkaku Jul. 6, 2008 @ 11:59 PM EDT

Nothing really front-page worthy here, so... yeah, just an update if you stumble across it.

New banner. Certainly beats the old one that I scrapped together in a few minutes.

Plus, no-show in the Metal Gear Collab... I can only hope that my part made it into the second one. Jeff himself told me that he'd put it in, but there were so many technical difficulties, both on their part and mine, that I hope everything goes well.

Also, just three more weeks until I have August all to myself, and I can finally start on some actual quality animation, unlike the strangled-chibi kind I put out last year. I know, it's pitiful that I need all that time off just to work on cartoons, but that's just how life is around here. Work and college can be a bitch.

Just for a side note, I'm also taking up Actionscripting. It's complicated as hell, so I wouldn't expect any games until a year or so down the line, once everything becomes second nature. However, I understand the concept of the structure, so once I memorize all the terms and whatnot, I'm confident that I'll be able to put out some cool stuff. Here's hoping.

Anyway, yeah... not much else is going on. I just thought I'd dust off my profile.

Howdy Ken.

Your stuff always makes me laugh so I bet you'll make it into part 2... I just hope I can join you. no word on if my submission made it or not. :P

Also let me know how actionscript is going for you. I'm still trying to learn it myself lol.

Well, it certainly helps having prior knowledge to some other gaming language. I only took one semester of Lingo, but it gave me tons of insight on how Actionscript works. All I really have to do is swap out some of the terms and it's really the same thing. I'm pretty sure this applies to most other languages as well.

I would recommend getting the book Actionscript 3.0: Game Programming University by Gary Rosenweig. It teaches the language in the exact same manner as my college course, which is very effective. It's a very handy book because it's geared directly towards game programmers, so you get right to the material needed to program your games.

You'll have one section dedicated to showing you the concepts and terms of Actionscript with another having actual game examples. The author runs you through every bit of detail on how to write the code, and all you have to do is substitute his graphics with your own.

The book contains games like platformers, turret games, matching games, racing games, top-down adventure games... the whole kit and caboodle. They're insanely basic games, nothing that would earn you high points here, but it just shows you how the code works so that you can use it more effectively.

Here's his website, in case if you have to order the book. Trust me, it's worth it:

Can't wait for some new animations from you, Kenkaku. Still can't believe you made gamer kids with a mouse, that was pretty sweet. Don't bash 'em though, I think they're great. Are you going to make any more gamer kids or are you starting a whole new concept?

Jul. 7, 2008 | 1:46 PM Kenkaku responds:

I'll definitely make more alongside some new concepts. What they are is yet to be known.

But if you want to see true magnificence with a mouse, watch some of Luis' work. A+ stuff.
